More Hola amigos! Hi and Goodbye In person Phone manners ¡Hola Amigos! That seems to be very simply said, but the truth is that there are many ways to greet and goodbye people. In person, face to face greetings and goodbyes may be different from phone manners and letter or note-writing (though we won’t get into that!). In person it is always correct to start with: Buenos días Good Morning Buenas tardes Good afternoon (used until about sunset) Buenas noches Good evening and Good night Then you might segue to: Hola, ¿Cómo está? Hello, How are you? And ¿Cómo está su familia? How is your family? or ¿Cómo le puedo ayudar? How may I help you? (in a more formal or business situation) But there are multitudinous informal hellos: ¿Qué tal? What’s up? ¿Qué pasa? What’s going on? ¿Qué hubo? What’s been happening? ¡Oye! Hey! (listen) ¿Qué hay? What is there (going on)? As well as goodbyes: Hasta luego See you soon Hasta mañana See you tomorrow Hasta el martes See you Tuesday (substitute any day of the week here) Adiós Goodbye Que vaya con Diós Go with God Hasta entonces Until then (see you then) Chao Ciao (Italian for goodbye, but equally used) Diós te bendiga God bless you Believe me, this doesn’t begin to cover them, just prepare yourselves for variations! Now, on the phone, if you should call someone, they might pick up and say: Hola… Hello Aló… Hello (Strictly on the phone) Bueno… Well (what do you want)? Diga… Speak! Sí… Yes? And you would greet them courteously and get on with it…and end with an equally courteous goodbye. Good luck with the middle part! (The easiest way to ask for someone is to say…) ¿Está (la señora/el señor/name of person)? meaning Is so-and- so home? Or you could try ¿Puedo hablar con (name of person)? meaning May I speak to ________? Well friends, this should be plenty to get you in trouble for now. Remember to practice every chance you get! ¡Hasta la próxima! Chao for now! ¡Adiós!
