That’s probably what’s foremost on your mind when you shop… How much does it cost? But there’s plenty of other stuff to know also: Does it come in pink (blue, green, whatever!)? ¿Lo tiene en rosado (azul, verde, etc.)? Do you have it in my size? ¿Lo tiene en mi talla? Or ¿Lo tiene como para mi? You can always request pequeño, mediano, o grande…small, medium or large, or say “Mas grande todavia”…even bigger! And likewise even smaller, “Mas pequeño, por favor. And then there are all those details… Manga larga Long sleeve Manga corta Short sleeve Sin mangas Sleeveless Con cierre with zipper Sin cierre without zipper Con botones with buttons Sin botones without buttons Abierto open Cerrado closed Cuello “Ve” V-neck De cuero Leather De lana Wool De algodón Cotton De seda Silk De oro Gold De plata Silver De niño child’s De hombre Men’s De mujer Women’s We have all heard that in open air markets it is sometimes appropriate to bargain. Please be respectful when you do this, and hopefully it will be a win-win situation for all involved. A conversation might go like this: Comprador: Buenos días Buyer: Good morning Vendedor: Buenos días, señorita Seller: Good morning, miss ¿Cómo le puedo ayudar? How may I help you? Comprador: Estoy mirando, Buyer: I’m just looking, nada más, gracias. Thank you. Alter looking for a few minutes the Buyer finds something and asks… Comprador: ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? Buyer: How much is this? Vendedor: Vale cinco dólares. Seller: It costs five dollars. Comprador:¿Tanto? Buyer: That much? Vendedor: Sí, señorita. Seller: Yes, miss. Comprador: Es muy caro. Buyer: It’s very expensive. Vendedor: Si desea, le puedo dar Seller: If you want, I can give dos por nueve dólares. You two for nine dollars. And you can imagine the rest. Some other phrases that might come in handy are: No, gracias. No thank you. Por ahora no, gracias. Not now, thank you. ¡Ay, que pena! Oh, that’s too bad! Vuelvo mañana. I’ll be back tomorrow.
