Motivation I
by Richard Brownkatz
Lot's of people write about getting, keeping, and maximizing motivation to exercise.
People read magazines, watch videos, follow heroes, play certain music, focus on their goals. chant affirmations...and on and on to get themselves to feel like exercising.
And that's great. Motivation's terrific. Nothing better than feeling like you can't wait to hit the gym.
But those days will come when you just don't feel motivated, when just thinking of going to the gym sounds exhausting, when excuses pour out of you, when your to do list swells, and, and, and ...
Consider:
The will - not the feeling like. It's a choice.
To extend oneself - to go further, stretch some, to work.
To nurture - to help
grow, to use some energy. The Spiritual Growth - how's that go? Which spiritual tradition?
In almost every tradition, there is something about taking care of the basics
fits. "Feed my sheep." "Chop wood, carry water."
And look who you do this for first.
So when the day comes you just don't feel like it, maybe in fact you dread it, consider that definition of love, then choose, and go exercise.
Afterwards, that's when you'll love it.
